Yacht mechanics

   Marine engines

Our team includes experienced mechanics who are familiar with all makes of marine engines. They provide competent, reliable and affordable service and repair work for all diesel and gasoline engines. Also, they will advise you regarding any question you may have concerning the engine of your boat.

   Electrical engineering

Our team of specialists maintains and repairs all types of electrical equipment, cabin and navigation lights, card plotters, GPS plotters, sumlogs, depth sounders, radar reflectors, wind systems and all other electrical and electronical yacht equipment.

  Bow and stern thrusters

In recent years, SYS has specialised in the installation of bow thrusters. We install bow thrusters that fit your boat, from a choice of manufacturers including Vetus,  Maxpower, Rheinstrom and Luma. A special characteristic of the bow thrusters installed by us is the deflecting lip which avoids that, once the boat is cruising, too much sea water passesthrough the thruster tunnel. Bow thrusters are fed by a separate battery and when selecting a bow thruster for your boat we take into account the dimensions of the tunnel and the size and power of the engine so that, when required, the bow thruster provides optimum output and performance.

In the case of large and fast sailing boats we recommend the installation of retractable bow thrusters whereas in the case of motor yachts it may be advisable to install both bow and stern thrusters, the combined use of which make the yacht much easier to manoeuver inside the harbour. If your boat is equipped with bow and stern thrusters, their combined use  allows you to move even a 15 meter long boat with just the tip of one finger  and park it safely in its berth. The bow thruster comes with a sacrificialanode that has to be replaced during the annual maintenance operations ofthe boat.

   Anchoring

When choosing an electric anchor winch, special attention should be paid that it has sufficient battery capacity. The size and capacity of the anchor  winch depends on the weight and diameter of the anchor chain. Depending  upon the boat, anchor winches can be mounted above or below deck.

  Holding tanks

The planning and installation of holding tanks must take into account the technical aspects as well as the existing legislation regarding environmental protection. Our specialists carry out the entire job: they plan, construct and mount the tanks, try them out and maintain them afterwards. We provide fast service and have a complete spare parts service. Our holding stands are either standard size or made-to-measure. All holdingtanks are built and installed in compliance with the relevant legislation.

   Vacuum installations

When waste water has to be transferred for centralised treatment, vacuum techniques save space and costs: small hose sections combined with the  possibility to install the sanitary installations anywhere on board make for a more flexible boat design and at the same time help to save large amounts of water. Our vacuum installations transfer waste water from the bathroom even  vertically to the central treatment unit or holding tank. Vacuum techniques thus reduce space requirements and no additional transfer pumps are required.

   Hatches

We make and install fixed cockpit windshields as well as all types of deck and hull hatches and windows, and make or order aluminium or stainless steel  frames that fit your requirements.

Hot and cold water pressure systems

We install and repair the hot and cold water pressure systems of your boat.

We always recommend that all automatic pumps are equipped with compensation tanks, since these contribute to considerably prolonging the life of the  pumps. Another advantage is that the water pressure does not drop the very moment an additional tap is opened - this can be quite a nuisance,  especially if you are just standing under the shower!

   Compact air conditioning units

Do you spend more of your time in the water than on board because you cannot stand the heat under deck? Do you find it impossible to sleep at night because of the heat and the mosquitos zooming about? Now the time has come to install air conditioning unit, specially designed for use on pleasure craft and easy to install at any moment. They have a compact design and all components are mounted on the same base plate. They come ready for use and only require a sea water connection and can be installed anywhere on your boat. Once installed,   the hoses will transport the chilled air all through the boat. Also, the integrated heating unit permits you to prolong the sailing season, and you  may even decide to spend New Year in your favourite sailing spot. Another advantage is that these units also help to reduce the humidity of the air  below deck - at night the hatches can remain closed and the mosquitos have  nowhere to enter the boat.

Electrical system, generator, batteries, shore power

Electricity is one of the most important resources on board. We need  electricity to start the ship's diesel engine, for our lights, pumps, radio transmitter, electric winches, navigation lights and luxury appliances suchas hot water boiler and music. None of these work if we have noelectricity. A boat without electric light may be a very romantic sight,  especially at night. Everything is quiet and dark, and inside you can see people grouped around the light of a candle. But if your boat is anchored in a solitary cove, an electricity failure can be serious and even   dangerous. Below deck you can always use a flash light, but this is hardly  enough for the necessary anchor light. If there is no moon, your boat tu into a dark shadow, invisible to any other boat entering the same cove. This can lead to dangerous situations and even cause a collision. Moreover, it may not be possible to start the ship's engine and you also have no radio to send out a call for help. Compared with this, the fact thatyou may not be able to get fresh water from the tank is only a very minor problem.

Two battery systems
In order to avoid such a complete electricity failure, most boats have two separate battery systems, one for the service facilities and the other  exclusively to start and run the engine. The reason behind this is that in case of trouble, the engine offers the only way to generate electricity.  In such a situation - the batteries having gone flat whereas the electricity is most urgently required - the engine can be started and will provide   electricity for all essential services and, at the same time, recharge the empty batteries. With a separate battery for the engine, it started in most cases, even if the service battery is totally empty because somebody forgot to turn off the lights.

Recharching your batteries and large-scale consumers
Most boats only have two choices to recharge their batteries: either with the help of the engine or with shore power. As long as the harbour provides the necessary shore power or the engine is kept running, you can even use the large-scale consumers without depleting your batteries (same situation as with your car). These large-scale consumers include anchor winches, refrigerator, pumps, position lights, spotlights, hot water boiler, etc.   You should bear in mind that you can only use your anchor winch while your engine is still running, whereas there is less problem with water pumps, since  they are normally used for a relatively short period of time.
